Soft bonnets were the most popular head covering of the 1800s. Most were used around home to protect the wearer from the sun and the rain....  This bonnet is one of the most popular styles in the 1800s. It was called the slat bonnet. 7 slats keep the brim stiff. They can be easily taken out so the hat can be washed.  The design came from a Godey's Lady's Magazine. Remember that your bonnet does not have to match your outfit! Some bonnets were decorated more than others. The poorer folks used their cloth bonnets for good, but fancied them up with ruffles and ribbon.

This is a spoon bonnet. My version of it anyway.  I did added the curtain to the back because I could not find any evidence that they were made without.   Constructed of buckram and wire. I used over 5 yards of ribbon for the trim. I used a ostrich feather... very festive.

This beautiful winter hat as illustrated in the 1861 Peterson magazine in my collection.  The beautiful flowers and large ostrich plume make this hat stand out.  The ties help keep the hat snuggly on the head.
