Woman's Dresses and Gowns

Last Update August 25, 2002

The prices are for basic labor (That does include the self small pipping in the sleeves and the topstitching down the back if requested) only and will vary depending on how elaborate the decoration. You choose your own fabrics! (Or agree to my choices) You choose the boning you want added. The price DOES NOT include closures or heming (As those would need to be hand sewn) All skirts can be made with 135" or 180" circumference at the hem. (I recommend a hem facing for durability and cleanliness) I will hand gauge your skirt for extra $20. Otherwise the skirt will be machine sewn. Any other hand sewing I charge $20 an hour. :-)

This is a day dress that can be made as a 1 or 2 piece. The fitted bodice features vertical darts in front, side seams toward the back, and front closure to enhance the narrow waist. This type of bodice is said to be the most popular in the 1860's.  .  Sleeves are full at the elbows and can be 2 piece coat sleeve, gathered sleeve, pleated, bishop, or pagota. Dress is shown here as a 2 piece dress with coat sleeves. The skirt is large enough to be worn over a hoopskirt. The skirt shown is inverted box pleated to a waistband approximately 175" circumference at the hem.

Top closures are in front. Shown with 135" hem circumference skirt. Undersleeves sold seperately.

An elaborate 3 piece day dress. This design came partially from the book "Patterns of Fashion 1" and "Patterns of Fashion 2" by Janet Arnold and also from a Godey Fashion Plate. The above 4 piece dress that I have created from a Godey Fashion plate and  pattern from 1857's. (shown) It is not accurate to be 2 different colors, but it sure looks pretty. To be totally accurate the belt and brace would all be one color. 6 tassles decorate the top, adds such a wonderful touch. Undersleeves not included

Undersleeves are a must for almost every reenactor. If you do not have a pair you will need one eventually. They are very simple, but add some color to your wardrobe. They were normally white and had a draw string at the top. (NOT elastic) I like to make them from the thinest muslin or voile I can find. The material is included with the price.
