Civil War Original Dresses
(Last update May 21, 2001)
This dress was for sale on ebay by a seller who kindly allowed me to use his photos and discriptions. I am researching childrens dress to be able to recreate them for my children. Nice to see such an old dress in such good condition.
| This is one of the sweetest 1860's Civil War era dresses that I have ever come across! I have had a lot in the white cotton or batiste, but usually the printed little girl's dresses from this period did not survive through the years. The seams and stitching are invisible, and I actually had to use a magnifying glass to make sure that it is entirely hand stitched! Inside is as finished as the outside. Drawstring neck with original ribbon tie, mother of pearl buttons with stars (see close up photograph) five buttons all original. There is a small stain on the front that I have tried to photograph that has a couple of tiny holes (again, I used a 10X magnifier to see this) and a couple of very light faded yellowing spots, not distracting nor unusual for a child's garment of this age or material. Measures 20" from neck edge to hem in front, same in the back, 13" being from the waist to bottom edge of hem. Sleeve opening is 6" in circumference, seams are about 1/8" or less! Print is a tiny pink and burgundy fleur de les type pattern. The photographs appear a bit yellow, but actually, the dress is off white in background. This is truly a treasure that would complement any setting that you wish authenticate-one of a kind! |
| I seem to have lost the seller on ebay who did such a good job describing this sweet Civil War dress. Although it is rather plain I think it suits a county or work dress. More of a dress for a boy I think.... |
