Modest Modern
Last update June 24, 2002
This is going to be one of my favorite pages.... I am going to be sharing patterns and dresses to sell that are modest with a hint of history. I am really tired of buying a pattern or a dress from the store that are too low, slit too high, or too short to be considered modest. All prices are for labor only.....
This is now my favorite regency dress pattern. It is high enough so that when you bend over nothing shows. What a relief. The front and back sides are all one piece as the originals. The sleeves also have the seam towards the back. I am basing this pattern on a dress on a period pattern with one that Mary wore from Pride and Prejudice. Although most people I think ignored her more modest dresses I was looking for a good pattern for something I could wear and not be afraid to bend over! A must when you have children!
MM1 Price:$85
Pattern: $15
| The pattern was inspired by a drawing in Janet Arnold's Patterns of
Fashion. The empire costume is slightly fitted through the waist and hips. It can also
open in the front. Great for nursing moms. :-) The material I choose to make the
dress was so thin when I went to iron the hem in I burned it! So as a result the skirt is
a tad bit shorter than it should be. Over 25 buttons are used on this dress. I
especially like the use of buttons on the skirts. It keeps it from flapping up as some
long skirts do. E5 Price: $90 |
| Here is another dress inspired by a Janet Arnold drawing. This
features Kimono sleeves. The top is all one piece. It requires only 3 measurements and
some fitting on the neckline. Very simple and easy pattern. It is very comfortable. The
skirt is gored, and darted. I gathered mine in the back just a little because I like the
extra room. Excuse the cat. He did not like my duck tape double in his way! E6 Price: $80 |
Coming Soon (in July).... 2 1825-30 summer dresses
